OPPO has announced the integration of AI into its branded smartphones by the end of 2024. The Chinese smartphone brand has collaborated with industry giants like Microsoft, Google, and MediaTek for generative AI aka GenAI features.
OPPO GenAI Integration for Smartphones
OPPO aims to bring its advanced AI capabilities to enhance user experiences in image processing, natural language processing, and smart charging. The Chinese smartphone giant has already filed over 5,399 AI patents globally, including 3,796 patents in image processing.
To recall, OPPO established the OPPO AI Centre in Shenzhen in February 2024. The OPPO AI Centre helped the brand centralise resources and support the systematic development of image processing, computer vision, speech technology, natural language processing, and machine learning.
OPPO adheres to its earlier pledge of not using user data to train models by prioritising robust data security and privacy protection. The company will equip its flagship smartphones with Google Gemini LLMs, which include an AI Toolbox with an AI Writer and an AI Recording Summary.
The tool also supports seamless language translation to enable content creation in multiple languages. The smartphone giant has consistently invested in technology, which has led to the development of SuperVOOC, imaging algorithms, the Battery Health Engine, and more.
OPPO is working with Microsoft to bring more efficient, accurate, and natural voice and text conversion with Microsoft Fast Transcription and Neural TTS technology. By this year, OPPO smartphone users can use Desktop Copilot to generate content.
The collaboration with MediaTek is for chipsets with dedicated AI processing units (NPUs) and accelerators. The IDC report suggests that AI phone shipments in the sub-$1,000 (approx. Rs 83,450) segment will grow 250% in 2024, with a total shipment of 35 million units.
OPPO claims that generative AI will enter everyday life in the upcoming years. The company is also the first to deploy an LLM with 7 billion parameters on a smartphone.
