WhatsApp is planning to introduce new AR features for audio and video calls in a bid to modernise the whole calling experience. The Meta-owned messaging platform recently introduced several new features for video calling on mobile and desktop versions. Here are the details.

WhatsApp Audio and Video Calls Get AR Treatment

Popular WhatsApp tracking website, WABetaInfo has spotted new AR features in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.13.14 update. According to the report, WhatsApp is working on an AR feature to introduce call effects and filters in a future update.

As you can see in the screenshot above, WhatsApp is working on a redesigned calling screen with three tabs (filters, background, and effects) at the bottom. We can see a face editing and magic wand icon in the top left corner, which could be the face and video enhancement tools. We can also see a low light mode for making calls in dark environments.

These features can make video calls fun and interactive. The background tool will particularly be useful for many as it will allow users to customise the background or blur it like Skype or Google Meets.

It is said the background editing tool will also make its way to the desktop version in the future. This will be helpful for those who host or attend group conferences on WhatsApp by managing professional background adjustments during the call.

According to the website, WhatsApp will let users present their avatar in the real-time video feed, much like on iOS. This will help them maintain their anonymity and also facilitate creative expression. These features are currently under testing and will be rolled out to general users soon. We will keep you posted whenever this happens, so, stay tuned.
