Apple is said to be working on a major overhaul for its virtual assistant Siri with new AI-powered features. According to the latest Bloomberg report, Siri will soon allow users to control individual app functions using voice commands. These features will be unveiled at the upcoming Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2024.

Apple’s Siri To Get a Touch of AI

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that Apple is working to integrate large language models (LLMs) in Siri to introduce some generative AI features. The assistant will also gain abilities for powerful functions such as opening individual documents, moving files, summarizing an Apple News article, sending emails, and performing other advanced tasks.

At the moment, Siri on Apple devices has limited functionalities and is mainly used for simple tasks like controlling music, smart home gadgets, asking about weather, etc. The new AI integration in Siri would make the assistant come closer to its competitors like Google Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Gurman’s report further mentions that Apple will use AI to analyze people’s usage patterns and help them create Siri-controlled features. These features will initially be introduced in Apple apps and will soon be available in hundreds of other apps on the App Store.

WWDC 2024 is expected to focus heavily on Siri. Apple is currently lagging in the AI assistant race. The integration of Gemini and ChatGPT in Android smartphones is far superior to Siri’s present limited functions in iOS.

In addition to advancements in Siri, Apple is also said to be working on other AI features like voice memo transcriptions, a quick recap from websites, automated message replies, advanced photo editing, AI-generated emojis, etc. Apple’s focus on AI was evident from its recent launch of the new iPads, where the company introduced the Apple M4 chip, which is claimed to be the fastest chip for AI in the world. The WWDC 2024 is scheduled for June 10, 2024.
