Last September, Sony confirmed that Jim Ryan would be stepping down as CEO. The company has now announced a leadership shift, naming Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino co-CEOs to oversee the PlayStation Business starting June 1.
As stated in the official press release, Hermen Hulst, who serves as PlayStation Studios chief, will be appointed CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) studio business group.
Hideaki Nishino will be appointed CEO of SIE’s platform business group. Both will report to Sony CFO and SIE chairman Hiroki Totoki.
After Jim Ryan left, Hiroki Totoki served as Interim CEO and worked to find a successor for the SIE CEO role. However, the company has chosen to split PlayStation leadership between two co-CEOs. It is a good move as both are Sony veterans, with Nishino having 2 decades of experience at Sony.
Nishino will oversee the technology, products, and services that define the PlayStation experience. This includes hardware, software, network infrastructure, and fostering relationships with third-party developers and publishers. His experience developing PlayStation products and services will be crucial in this role.
Hulst, the co-founder of Horizon Forbidden West developer Guerrilla Games, will be responsible for all aspects of SIE’s first-party content, including development, publishing, and business operations. His proven track record in leading PlayStation Studios and overseeing successful game adaptations like “The Last of Us” positions him well to shape the future of PlayStation games.
