Samsung galaxy S2 is one of the most popular high end mobiles released by Samsung. The sale of the handset had crossed 10 million units in less than 5 months since its launch, the fastest for any Samsung device. Here we shall look at some of the most important reasons for the popularity of the device, in spite of its seemingly high price tag.

  1. The Galaxy S2 is one of the few handsets available in the market with Dual Core processor. This and the 1 GB RAM allows the handset to run fast and complex games much better almost at the level of PCs. That makes it an awesome phone for hardcore gamers.
  2. The samsung Galaxy S2 is only 8 mm thin, which makes it one of the thinnest handsets available in the market. It is even thinner that the iPhone 4S which was released several months after the release of galaxy S2. Weighing only 116 gm, the Galaxy S2 is exceptionally light as well.
  3. It has  a 4.3″ super AMOLED touch screen.
  4. At 18.3 hours, the phone provides one of the best talk time amongst the high end phones.
  5. considering all the features of the phone, the price tag does not look all that high.

Ever since we started asking friends to help us in our hiring efforts, we have got into number of discussions around ease or difficulty of getting awesome engineers in a specific city and for specific skills. We went ahead with the only hammer that we have and crawled data from startup job boards and career pages of companies (list). Analysis of the content of these jobs threw out some expected and some unexpected results.

Highlights of the study

  1. Bangalore is the hottest city but it has some strong competition from Mumbai and Delhi.
  2. Hyderabad lagged behind Pune and Chennai
  3. PHP is the most popular skill among startups.
  4. We were surprised to see Java beat out other more popular languages like Python and RoR.
  5. In other skills, mobile development and sales roles beat out demand for Social media or SEO professionals.

June 21st, 2011 | Posted by Sulakshan in Mobiles - (0 Comments)

After yesterday’s list about best android phones in India below 10000, today we are back with a list of Nokia 3g mobiles below 5000. There are only two mobiles from Nokia below Rs. 5000 which are 3G compatible. The two mobiles are Nokia 2730 classic and Nokia C2-01.

Nokia 2730 classic

Nokia 2730 Classic: The Nokia 2730 Classic price is Rs. 3,450 and it is the cheapest 3G mobile from Nokia. The phone can support 2G networks along with 3G networks. The phone can be connected to the internet through GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth and WAP apart from 3G. The Nokia 2730 has Opera Mini browser for surfing the net. It comes pre-installed with windows live messenger as well.

The Nokia 2730 classic has a 2 megapixel camera. While that is not as awesome as the 12 megapixel camera on Nokia N8, considering the Nokia N8 price, i can not complain about it either. The battery of the phone has 3.20 hours talk time on 2G networks and 2.45 hours on 3G network.

Nokia C2-01Nokia C2-01: The Nokia C2-01 is another 3G mobile from Nokia available below 5000. The price of Nokia C2-01 is Rs. 3,850. While pricier than the 2730 it is not that different either. The C2-01 is an enhanced version of Nokia C1-01. It has a 3.2 megapixel camera compared to 2 megapixel camera in case of Nokia 2730. Similar to the 2730, the C2-01 has a 2.0 inch screen.

The Nokia C2-01 has a better talk time compared to the 2730. The optical zoom on both the mobiles are similar to each other. The Nokia C2-01 can be connected to the internet over GPRS, EDGE and Bluetooth apart from 3G connections.

If you can expand your budget a little more then you can look at Nokia 7230 as well. Even though at Rs. 5,500, the 7230 is more expensive than the other two.

Samsung Galaxy Y Duos2. Samsung Galaxy Y Duos

If you needed a dual sim phone, then buying a quality android phone was out of question. All that has changed with the advent of Samsung Galaxy Y Duos. The Samsung Galaxy Y Duos Price is Rs. 8,499. This is the best android phone with dual sim. The Galaxy Y Duos has specification similar to the Galaxy Y but it is a dual sim mobile.

3. Samsung Galaxy Pop: If the above two recommendations made you feel that we may be obsessed with QWERTY mobiles then this one should get rid of it. The galaxy Pop is a full touch android mobile running on Android 2.2. The Pop has a 3.14 inch capacitive touch screen and runs on a 600 Mhz processor. It is a true social media phone and comes loaded with native apps for Facebook, Orkut and twitter. Like the other two phones from the Samsung family, this one has a 3.0 megapixel camera and most modern connectivity options like wi-fi and GPRS. The Samsung Galaxy Pop price is Rs. 7,999.

The Charm has a 2.8 inch screen and runs on a 600 MHz processor. Motorola has introduced its motoblur UI on the charm which enables the phone to bring updates from your facebook or twitter stream onto the homescreen itself. That makes the Motorola Charm one of the best choices for people active on social networks.

The screen of Motorola Charm is made from Gorilla glass which makes it scratch proof. The phone has a 3.0 megapixel camera and it can record videos as well.

LG Optimus OneLG Android Phones in India below 10000

Micromax Bling 27. Micromax Bling 2: The ultimate Android Phone below 10000 for girls

While the Micromax Andro A60 has been the lowest priced android phone in India for quite sometime, the quality of the A60 left a lot to be desired. Now Micromax has come up with a successor to its widely successful Bling model on the Android platform. The Micromax Bling 2 price is Rs. 8,349 and this is perhaps the only mobile that tries to sell itself on the looks alone. With swarovski on the front and end panel, the Bling has been able to attract style conscious girls with its “it twinkels” advertisements. The Bling 2 is a full touch screen phone with a 2.8 inch touch screen and runs on Android 2.2. It has a 3.0 megapixel camera and is capable of connecting to as many as 8 devices through wi-fi hotspot.

Our list of android phones in India continues to be one of the most important resources for users looking to buy an android mobile. Even larger number of android mobiles are getting added to the list every month. In this post we look at some of the important android mobiles that came to India during May 2011.

LG Optimus 2X: At a price tag close to Rs. 27,000 the Optimus 2X falls right at the top end of android phones available in India. Unsurprisingly the phone boasts of one of the best configuration available in the market. The phone has a 4 inch screen and 8 megapixel camera. With a 1 GHz dual core processor and 512 mb RAM the phone is as powerful as most of the laptops available only 1 year back!! As a matter of fact the Optimus 2X is the first android phone to ship with a dual core processor. The phone actually competes with other Android based tablets like Samsung galaxy Tab and Dell Streak.

HTC Wildfire S: This is one of the android phones below 15000 introduced in May 2011. This mobile has got a 5.0 megapixel camera and runs on Android 2.3. At 3.2 inches the touch screen is smaller compared to the Optimus 2X but considering the price different that should be expected. The Wildfire S has a 600 MHz processor and 512 MB RAM. The screen has a resolution of 320 * 480 pixels. The Wildfire S competes with Samsung Galaxy Ace.

There were two android mobiles introduced in the Android phones below 10000 range. The Spice Mi 270 and Micromax Bling 2. The Bling 2 is a successor to the earlier Micromax Bling and hence it will be a great attraction for women. It comes with a 3 megapixel camera and has got Swarovski Zirconia in the front and back panels. The Spice Mi 270 is one of the few dual sim android phones available in the market. Unfortunately it comes with a resistive touch screen which may result in a less responsive touch interface. The Mi 270 has a 2 megapixel camera compared to the 3 megapixel camera available in the Micromax Bling 2.

Micromax has gone onto become one of the most selling mobiles brands in India. While all the buzz surrounds the latest mobiles like Micromax M2 and Micromax Bling 2, the Micromax X series continues to have some of the best value for money mobile phones. In this post we shall look at 5 of the best mobiles from this series. All these mobiles belong to Micromax mobiles below 5000.

Micromax X560Micromax X560: Priced at Rs. 4,237 , the Micromax X560 is the priciest mobile in this list!!. This bar shaped mobile weighs 100 grams and can house two GSM sims simultaneously. With a touch screen interface and a 2 megapixel camera, the X560 is completely worth the money. It would have been better if the touch screen were a little more responsive.

Micromax Psych: The Micromax Psych has almost all the important features of the X560 like touch screen interface and 2 mega pixel camera. The Psych has a better aesthetic appeal as well. Considering that it is cheaper by 1000 rupees compared to the X560, we recommend most people to go with the psych. However please note that the psych has a 2.8 inch touch screen as compared to 3.2 inch touch screen for X560. It does not have Wi-Fi support as well. It comes with a number of different color back covers as well.

Micromax X600Micromax X600: Touch screen and 2.0 megapixel camera seem to be the common minimum features for mobiles in this range. The Micromax X600 costs a little less than Rs. 4000. It is also known as Micromax Gravity because it can switch the active SIM when the user simply rotates the mobile by 360 degrees. The X600 has a 3.2 inch screen but does not have wi-fi connectivity. Micromax should have provided a stylus with the touch screen as the screen is not that responsive.

Micromax X510 PikeMicromax X510: This is simply the most popular mobile in this price range. The X510 Pike comes with a large number of backpanels of different colors. Like all the phones in this post, the Micromax X510 has a 2.0 megapixel camera, dual sim and touch screen. At close to 15 inches, it is one of the thickest phones in this list. However with a price tag of only Rs. 2856, it more than compensates for these minor issues.

Micromax X290Micromax X290: The Micromax X290 is quite different from the other four phones in this list. It does not have a touch screen. While the X290 has a camera, it is a 1.3 megapixel one. Even though the phone is available for only Rs. 1,719, it does not have most of the connectivity options. It does not even support social networking and email. So go for this one only if you need a very basic dual sim phone. Otherwise it makes sense to go for the X510.

Chanakya’s Chant Review

June 1st, 2011 | Posted by Sulakshan in Books - (2 Comments)

This review of Chankya’s Chant by Aswini Sanghi is the first book review done by MySmartPrice. While we had reviewed a few online stores, we have not been able to review any books due to lack of time. However recently I was on a small vacation and got a chance to go through Chanakya’s chant. The book is so good that I wanted to share my views with all wonderful users of MySmartPrice.

Review of Chanakya’s Chant by Ashwin Sanghi

The first thought that came to my mind after reading the book is the movie Rang de Basanti. Similar to the movie, the book has two parallel tracks running in parallel. On one track the author describes the story of Chanakya or Kautilya, one of the most famous characters of history known as  Chandragupta Maurya’s mentor. He single handedly planned and executed the death of Dhanand, the most powerful emperor of his time, to take revenge for the killing of his father. Chanakya’s chant goes deeper into the childhood of Chanakya and his journey to become Kautilya.

The other track of the story takes the reader to the present day. Pandit Gangasagar Mishra draws inspirations from Chanakya to ensure that his protégé Chandini Gupta becomes the Prime Minister of India. Pandit Mishra seems to have taken Chanakya’s advice that the end justifies the means to heart. Nothing can stop him from achieving his ultimate goal. Similar to Chanakya, Pandit Gupta makes use of saam, daam, dand, bhed to accomplish his goals.

Mr sanghi has managed to write a well researched book in a manner that will keep the reader engaged till the end. What I liked the most about the story is that turns of events in the story were quite unpredictable. The book is written in a simple style and there are lots of sharp and witty observations by both Chanakya and Pandit Gupta.

On the negative side, the book is a little too verbose at places and the writer could have kept the number of pages to a lower number by doing away with some gory descriptions. There is a fair bit of profanity in the book as well.

To conclude the Chankya’s chant review, I will suggest to try this book especially if you take interest in history and/or politics. It is a good weekend read as well. This is the first book review done by us. Please let us know what you think of our review of Chankya’s chant. BTW if you are planning to buy the book then find out the best price of Chanakya’s chant.

MySmartPrice was started to make it easy to answer the question “Where should I buy XYZ?“.  XYZ being a specific book or mobile model. In the last 6 months, while trying to answer that question, we have realized that most non geeks do not start with a specific model in their mind. Rather they start with a statement similar to I want an android based Touch Screen phone in the range of 7-11k. It will be great if it has a A QWERTY keyboard as well. Alternatively they may be looking for a Dual SIM mobile with support for CDMA connection below 6k. While buying a mobile offline that question is answered by the store assistant. We could find a few  tools that try to do something similar in the online world but we were not satisfied with those and decided to create something better for our users.

Here are the answers by the tool for your query for Android Mobiles with touch screen between 7000 and 11000 and here is the answer for Dual Sim CDMA mobiles below 6000. You can see the effect of all our hard work if you change your mind and want to change any of those criteria.

The tool is still under development. Please give it a spin and let us know your feedback in the comments.
