When Google announced the new ‘Android One’ initiative during the Google I/O 2014 conference, the media was going gaga over it and went on praising how it would change the low-end smartphone market. General consumers however, didn’t clearly understand what exactly Android One is. Is it a newer version of Android? Or is it a special version of Android? Is it new software or hardware or both?

LG G3 vs. HTC One M8

It is safe to say that the hardware segment insofar as the mobile industry is concerned has plateaued. If you’re interested in buying a high-end handset today, it is more than likely it features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 or the 805. A similar scenario is seen in the low-end segment. The Mi 3 is the exception in this case, but most devices in this category end up using MediaTek’s hardware. Qualcomm is getting more traction with a variant of the Snapdragon 200, but MediaTek controls the majority of the share in this segment, much like what Qualcomm does in the high-end market.

Google officially launched the Android One platform in India today, with local vendors Micromax, Karbonn and Spice offering handsets based on the reference design. With the platform, Google is aiming to bridge the divide between the high-end segment and the entry-level market, and is set to offer a consistent user experience across all Android One devices. The crux of the initiative is that Google will provide a list of vendors and components to handset manufacturers, which they can then build on. Therefore, all Android One devices that launch today will offer the same specs under the hood, with the major differentiator being the external design.

Gionee Elife S5.5 India Launch

Gionee held a media event in Goa today, where it unveiled its latest handset, the Elife S5.5. Gionee was quite successful with the Elife E series thus far in the country and is looking to diversify its device portfolio with the Elife S series. Starting with the Elife S5.5, Gionee is targeting two different sets of users in India: The Elife E series will be catered to those users that want the best camera sensors. The Elife S series will be offered toward a design-focused audience. The “5.5” in the Elife S5.5 refers to the thickness of the device. The slim form factor makes the device the slimmest mobile currently available.

Gionee is not just focusing on the design of the handset. The Elife S5.5 features great hardware in the form of a 5-inch full-HD AMOLED screen, 2 GB DDR3 RAM, 16 GB internal storage, a MediaTek MT6592 octa-core processor that is clocked at 1.7 GHz, 13 MP camera at the back and a 5 MP shooter at the front that features a 95 degree ultra-wide angle lens. The device features a 2,300 mAh battery that is claimed to deliver a day’s worth of battery life on a single charge. The single-SIM handset boasts dimensions of 145.1 x 70.2 x 5.55 mm and is available in five colors. In terms of connectivity, the Elife S5.5 features Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth 4.0.

From the behest, Gionee has been intent on offering handsets that offer great value for money, and the scenario is no different with the Elife S5.5. Gionee has announced that the Elife S5.5 will be priced at Rs. 22,999 in India. The handset will be available for sale in the country starting April 27th. Considering that there are no viable contenders in the Rs 20,000 – Rs. 25,000 other than the Moto X, it is feasible that Gionee will attract a lot of consumer interest with the Elife S5.5.
