Apple finally announced the next-generation iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C today, and both devices come with new features. Let’s take a look:
This is the first iPhone to be designed out of a hard-coated polycarbonate shell, and comes in a variety of colour combinations. The back as well as the sides of the device are constructed from a single shell, with green, white, blue, red, and yellow colouring added at a later stage. The device also features custom cases that feature soft-feel silicon rubber. The iPhone 5C also includes a 4-inch Retina display, A6 SoC, FaceTime HD camera at the front with an 8-megapixel camera at the back of the device.
The iPhone 5S is constructed out of high-quality aluminum with chamfered edges, and comes in three colour variations, Slate, Gold, and Silver.
It is the first mobile device in the world to run on a 64-bit architecture. The A7 SoC included in the device is five times as fast as the A6 processor used in the iPhone 5. It is also fully backwards-compatible with 32-bit software.
The CPU on the iPhone 5S is 40 times faster than the first iPhone. Along with the A7, there is an M7 motion processor. It measures motion data continuously and can detect if you are stationary, walking or driving. This will be useful in building a whole new ecosystem of health and fitness software.
Battery on the iPhone 5S comes with a talk-time of 10 hours on 3G and the device is claimed to last 10 hours on LTE and Wi-Fi browsing. The device will last 250 hours on standby mode.
The camera on the iPhone 5S comes with a new sensor that has bigger pixels which take better pictures. True Tone flash is the new dual-LED flash that can detect over 1,000 variations of tones so that adjust automatically to the lighting conditions to give users the right colours in any lighting condition.
The camera also features autofocus matrix metering along with automatic white balance settings and comes with automatic digital image stabilization. It also comes with a burst mode takes 10 shots in a go and gives you the best shot.
Video recording of 720p videos in slow-motion at 120 FPS. Users can undertake on the fly adjustments between normal mode and slow-motion mode.
The iPhone 5S also features a new Touch ID fingerprint scanning authentication system. The sensor is built into the home button. The ring around the home button is the detection ring which switches the Touch ID sensor on when a user’s finger is around it. This can also be used as a method to authenticate iTunes. Coming over to iOS 7, Siri can now search tweets and comes with inline search as well as web search that features Bing. Also included are new ringtones, and a host of other enhancements. Additionally, iWork will be included free with new iOS devices.
